An excellent opportunity is available for aResearch Assistantto join the Weeden Laboratory in the Personalised Oncology Division at Australia’s pre-eminent biomedical research institute.

About the Position

We are seeking a motivated Research Assistant to support projects in our research group. The Weeden Lab investigates how environmental exposures, such as air pollution and heat stress, impact lung epithelial stem cells and contribute to lung diseases, including cancer. We are a multidiscplinary team that uses functional in vivo and ex vivo models to validate patient observational data.

The successful candidate will support cutting-edge research aimed at elucidating the molecular and cellular responses of the lung to environmental stressors, contributing to experimental design, data collection, and laboratory management.

Responsibilities:

  • Sample processing, cell isolation, molecular phenotyping
  • Developing sample cryopreservation techniques
  • Developing animal management systems
  • Maintain accurate experimental records and contribute to laboratory organization and safety.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including other WEHI laboratories and clinical partners.

Selection Criteria
Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • BSc with Honours or Masters in an appropriate area of study, or relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated laboratory research experience.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to accurately record data, results and the development of new methods and theories.
  • Project management, excellent oral and written communication and reporting skills.

Desirable Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience with animal management and/or patient tissue databases

Personal Qualities:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to high-quality research.
  • Enthusiasm for contributing to research that addresses critical public health challenges related to environmental exposures and lung disease.

Terms of Appointment
This position is 2 years in a full time capacity. Salary is Research Employee Level 5-6 ($76, 629 - $99,979). Up to 17% superannuation and very attractive salary packaging options are available.
